Be kind to nature...recycle your Christmas tree
After the holidays give nature a gift by recycling your
live-cut Christmas tree

Like many Ohioans, you put a lot of time and consideration into deciding which live-cut Christmas tree would decorate your home during the holidays. So, when it’s time to say good-bye to your tree, be just as thoughtful and think recycle.

Recycling your Christmas tree is an environmentally friendly alternative to throwing it in a landfill. Many Ohio communities (see list below) are making it easier to recycle trees by offering convenient curbside pickup or drop-off locations.

A recycled tree takes on a whole new life when it’s chipped and shredded as

    • landscape mulch, popularly used in local park districts and municipal projects
    • composted material for the garden, returning nutrients to the soil, reducing weeds and helping retain soil moisture.

or used for wildlife as

    • aquatic habitat: submerge the tree in a farm pond with a weight, such as a cinder block, so that it won’t float to the surface. This provides an excellent refuge and feeding area for fish.
    • shelter: place your tree in the corner of the yard where Ohio wildlife can use it as protection against winter’s harsh elements. Property owners with larger tracts of land will find multiple trees make for the most successful habitats.

Before you recycle your Christmas tree, please remember to:

  • Remove all trimmings such as tinsel, ornaments and garlands
  • Seek permission before discarding trees on private land or in ponds
  • Be responsible and check with local officials before dropping trees of at the nearest park or lake.
