EARTH SCIENCE WEEK

October 12-18, 2003

“Eyes on Planet Earth: Monitoring Our Changing World”

Everything in our lives depends on the Earth – from the air we breathe to the minerals used to make our products. It’s therefore prudent to observe and measure the Earth to help us understand the processes all around us and predict changes in the future.

To this end, geoscientists study the Earth in detail, from the up-close microscopic level to the out-of-this world satellite level.

Earth Science Week is an annual celebration of the contribution geoscience makes to civilization. Sponsored by the American Geological Institute, the objectives are to:

  • Encourage students to discover the Earth sciences.
  • Celebrate the contributions of the Earth sciences to our lives.
  • Encourage Earth stewardship through understanding.
  • Allow geoscientists to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about the Earth.

Take time this week to learn something about your home planet!
