The Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention is responsible for implementing source reduction, recycling, recycling market development and litter prevention programs. It also assists with Ohio’s Solid Waste Management Plan and encourages Ohioans to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled-content products.

Division Grant Programs

The division offers the Community Development Grant and the Market Development Grant to counties, solid waste districts and cities with populations of 50,000 or greater. The purpose of the grant programs is to implement statewide solid waste recycling, source reduction, recycling market development for multiple materials, including scrap tires, and litter prevention programs.

“Plant Pride, Not Litter” Adopt-A-Roadway Program

The Adopt-A-Roadway Program is a volunteer litter prevention program for county and township roads. The program encourages local residents, civic organizations, fraternal and business groups to adopt two miles of county and/or township roadways. To participate in the program, you must be willing to pick up litter at least two times a year, be at least 12 years old and provide adult supervision for youth groups that participate in cleanups.

The Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention initiated a Waste Characterization study at 11 selected solid waste management districts throughout the state to find out how much of Ohio’s garbage can be recycled.

Social Marketing for Recycling in Ohio

Program includes a Social Marketing for Recycling in Ohio guidebook and local community workshops. Social marketing relies on research-based planning to achieve measurable results. It offers local communities an alternative approach to the use of traditional methods of community outreach in the effort to increase public participation in recycling collection and buy-recycled programs.

State Government Facilities

The Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention provides technical assistance, materials and financial support to Ohio’s state government facilities to help improve recycling efforts and reduce waste. Program support is available for implementing, improving and continuing recycling, buying recycled, source reduction and waste prevention programs.

State University and College Workgroup

The division has worked with Ohio’s public and private universities and colleges to help improve campus recycling programs. The division provides technical assistance and facilitates regional workshops. Areas of concentration include physical facility waste and recycling operations, source reduction and waste prevention strategies, buying recycled and awareness and education campaigns.
