PUBLIC WATERFOWL HUNTING OPPORTUNTIES
ON WILDLIFE AREAS IN NORTHEAST OHIO

AKRON, OH – Waterfowl hunters planning to hunt public areas in northeast Ohio this season are encouraged to review the information below for any changes that occurred since last season.

Grand River Wildlife Area, Trumbull County – Discontinued controlled hunt. All portions of the Grand River Wildlife Area are now open to public hunting every day of the season.  Since 1998 a portion of the area on Norton Lane has been open by permit only.  These permits were issued through a same-day drawing at nearby Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area along with permits for waterfowl hunting at there.   Beginning this year waterfowl hunters may access this area without a special permit.  “Although hunter success was high, the area was too often overlooked and underutilized under the controlled hunt system” said Wildlife Management Supervisor Dan Kramer.  “Our goals of increased hunter access and participation will be better realized without a controlled hunt at Grand River”.

Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area, Wayne County - Unit One, By Permit Only. This includes all of Killbuck Wildlife Area north of the railroad tracks. A preseason public drawing is held each year in September for daily permits to hunt Unit One during the first two weeks of the waterfowl season (October 20- November 4, 2007). Hunters must be present to be drawn. For the location and time of the drawing contact the District Three office. After the first two weeks, Unit One will be hunted the same as Unit Two. Unit Two special regulations- includes all areas north of Force Rd. to the railroad tracks. Waterfowl may be hunted only until noon each Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday during the entire first segment of the season. Unit Two is open to public hunting beginning November 5, 2007 and every day thereafter. Unit Three is open to public hunting every day of the season and includes all areas within Holmes County.

Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area, Trumbull County - By Permit Only.   Field blind permits are available through a pre-season drawing.  Applications are taken each summer until the July 31 deadline.  Permits to hunt waterfowl in 19 flooded marsh units are offered at same-day drawings.  Drawings are held at the wildlife area headquarters at 5:30 am and 11:00 am on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during the waterfowl season.

Shenango Wildlife Area, Trumbull County - Special Regulations- the area north of St. Rt. 7 (Kinsman Unit) is open to public hunting only until noon each Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday during the first two weeks of the season (October 20- November 4, 2007) and then every day thereafter.  The remainder of the area is open to public hunting every day of the waterfowl season.
