COLUMBUS, OH – The annual fall stockings of rainbow trout in waterways across Ohio will be significantly reduced this year due to renovation of the Castalia State Fish Hatchery. Beaver and river otter trapping on public land will still require a special permit.  Similar to last year, controlled beaver and/or river otter trapping opportunities on 86 wildlife areas, state parks, and other publicly managed lands statewide will be awarded through a system of random drawings. However, applications and fees will not be accepted online this year.  Application forms are available online, but they must be printed by the applicant and mailed in along with all fees. Applications may also be obtained from district offices.

A spotted salamander, submitted by wildlife enthusiast Nina Harfmann, has won first place in the 3rd annual Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp Photo Contest. The winning photo will appear on the 2012 Legacy Stamp, which goes on sale March 1, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. Harfmann, of Pleasant Plain, captured her image in Warren County.

WEST UNION, OH – Deer hunters will again have access to prime deer hunting land at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve in Adams County for the 2011-2012 hunting season.  The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC), and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife opened land to deer hunting by permit only in 2006. New this season hunters must attend an informational meeting prior to the season to obtain The Edge of Appalachia hunting permits.

AKRON, OH- Youth dove hunting will be permitted on portions of the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Refuge by permit for the 2011-2012 season. Access to this portion of the property is restricted to permit-only hunting. The refuge is not open to the public otherwise.
