What To Look For
Founded in 1966 as part of an effort to conserve the surrounding Shaker Parklands from the intrusion of a planned freeway corridor, the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is a must-visit site for birders. A web of trails, including boardwalks, radiates out from the nature center and makes access to great birding habitats easy. This property's diversity of habitats includes wetlands, forest, lake, stream, and meadows.
The bird list is one of the largest for any single site in the Cleveland area, and birding is interesting at any season. Spring and fall migration can produce quite a checklist of migrants, and Shaker Lakes is a good spot for seeking Connecticut Warbler (mid-May to early June) and Olive-sided Flycatcher. There are resident Barred Owls, Wood Ducks, five species of woodpecker, and a good variety of nesting songbirds.

American White Pelican, Townsend's Solitaire, and Kirtland's Warbler have been found. Lesser rarities include Golden-winged Warbler, and the beautiful hybrid Lawrence's Warbler (hybrid between Golden-winged and Blue-winged warblers).
