ODNR Division of Wildlife - Hunting & Trapping - Hunter Education

The Basics

Hunter reading map

Ohio hunter education is for people with little or no knowledge of hunting or firearms. If you've had experience with hunting, shooting, and the outdoors, you may be able to skip hunter education through proficiency testing.

Certification Testing

Once you've completed the course work, you'll be given a 100-question test which includes a mix of multiple choice, matching, and true/false questions. A student must score 80% or higher on the test to pass and obtain certification.

Home-study completion course

If you've completed the home-study work, you will need to attend a final in-person instruction session. Bring your completed review quizzes to the class. The session will last 3 to 4 hours.

After the in-person training on firearms, ammunition, gun handling, and other safety issues, you will then be given the final hunter certification test described above.

The cost

There is no cost for Ohio hunter education. Once you've completed the work, you will be given the opportunity to purchase a hunting license for the remainder of the year.

The schedule

Times and locations of hunter education vary by county.
