Deer Harvest Comparison
2011-12 and 2012-13

This deer harvest report will be posted each Wednesday throughout the hunting season. Each report will compare the total harvest for the same number of hunting days for each year. This is necessary because the archery season opened five days earlier in 2011. Thus, any “harvest by date” comparisons would be invalid, as archers would have had an additional five days in 2011 to harvest deer. The additional five days of hunting opportunity in 2011 could mean a slightly lower total archery harvest  this year, all else being equal.  The report will include deer killed by longbow, crossbow, shotgun, handgun and muzzleloader.

One thing to consider is because this report is a day-to-day rather than a season-to-season comparison, its use will become limited as we move through our big firearms seasons, like the youth, gun and muzzleloader seasons. Once these seasons are behind us by a week or so, the comparison will again be a valid measure. The value of the new reports will be realized most during the early archery season. However, the early archery harvest tends to be a very good predictor of how the rest of the seasons will fare, assuming weather conditions are average.  However, in addition to these reports, we plan to do the traditional “season” comparisons.

In Ohio, deer archery season begins on the last Saturday in September. In some years, hunters have one September day of hunting while in another, they may have seven days.

The 2011 and 2012 deer harvest comparison is closely aligned in the Dec. 12 report. This is partly because the report measures the complete 2011 and 2012 week long deer-gun seasons. This is different from recent weeks, when the 2011 results were staggered when compared to 2012. Approximately 79 percent of the 2011 total deer harvested were recorded through this date.
