Limits

Hunters may only take one antlered deer per year regardless of how, when, or where taken. With the appropriate permits hunters may take up to six deer during the 2001- 2002 hunting season within the appropriate deer zones. Only one of the deer may be antlered.

If you kill an antlered deer, any other deer permit must be used for antlerless deer only. Antlered deer are deer with antlers 3 inches or longer in length; antlerless deer include deer without antlers and deer with antlers less than 3 inches in length. Deer Hunting Hours

Hours for deer hunting are one half hour before sunrise to sunset for the Special Season at the 3 primitive weapons deer hunting areas, Deer Gun Season, and Statewide Primitive Weapons Season. Archery season hours are one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset. See sunrise/sunset charts below...

License Requirements

A hunting license is required, regardless of age, to hunt all legal game in Ohio. Additional permits may be required to hunt specific game animals. More information...

  • All first-time hunters must pass a hunter education course before purchasing a hunting license.
  • Hunters age 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Hunters are required to carry a valid hunting license,permit(s),and stamp(s)when hunting.
  • To purchase a hunting license the applicant must:
    1. present a previously held hunting license,
    2. present evidence of having successfully completed a hunter education course,or
    3. state on the application that he or she is 21 years of age or older and has previously held a hunting license.

Resident Annual Hunting License
$15.00
Required for hunters age 16 to 65 who have resided in Ohio for the past 6 months.
Resident Annual Youth Hunting License $8.00 Required for hunters younger than age 16, at the time of purchase, who have resided in Ohio for the past 6 months.
Non-Residnet Annual Hunting License $91.00 Required for hunters who reside in another state, or who have lived in Ohio less than 6 months.
3-Day Tourist Hunting License $25.00 For non-residents of Ohio who plan to hunt for up to three consecutive days the following legal game:pheasant, quail, ruffed grouse, chukar partridge, woodcock, Wilson ’s snipe or jacksnipe, rails, coots, gallinule, ducks, geese, brant,crow, rabbit, squirrels, doves, boar, and groundhog. Not valid for deer, turkey or furbearers.
Senior Resident Annual Hunting License $0.00 Required for Ohio resident hunters 66 years of age and older.
It is unlawful to carry any type of license or permit of another person.

Permit Requirements

To hunt deer, you must have an annual hunting license and a Special Deer Permit. Then you may also purchase Urban Deer Permit(s) if you wish to take additional deer in one of the Urban Deer Units. More information....

Deer Permit Type Cost Description
Special Deer Permit $20.00 Every deer hunter must purchase at least one Special Deer Permit to hunt deer in Ohio. This permit is valid statewide for an antlered or antlerless deer. Hunters may purchase and use up to two of these permits.
Urban Deer Permit $10.00 Hunters must have first purchased a Special Deer Permit to be eligible to purchase an Urban Deer Permit. Urban Deer Permits are valid for antlerless deer only. Urban Deer Permits can be used only in areas designated as an urban unit or during a controlled hunt. A hunter may purchase and use up to four of these permits.
Senior Deer Permit $0.00 For Ohio residents age 66 and older. See Code 300 above for restrictions.
Senior Urban Deer Permit $0.00 For Ohio residents age 66 and older. See Code 320 above for restrictions.
It is unlawful to carry any type of license or permit of another person.

Special Deer Permit

This permit may be used statewide to take either an antlered or antlerless deer, depending on the hunting zone and season. It may be used during any of the deer hunting seasons, for controlled hunts or in designated Urban Units. No person may use more than two Special Deer Permits per license year. Hunters having used their two Special Deer Permits can only use Urban Permits for antlerless deer in Urban Units and Division of Wildlife controlled hunts. More information...

Urban Deer Permit

You must purchase a Hunting License and a Special Deer Permit to be eligible to purchase Urban Deer Permits. Urban Deer Permits are valid for antlerless deer only. The Urban Permit can be used only in areas designated as Urban Units or during a Division of Wildlife controlled hunt. A hunter may use no more than four Urban Deer Permits during the 2001-2002 season.

Urban Permits may be used to take antlerless deer at Division of Wildlife Controlled Hunts and in Urban Units only. (Any deer tagged with a Special Deer Permit applies to the zone bag limit, not the Urban Unit bag limit.) Only two Special Deer Permits may be used in a license year regardless of where the deer are taken.

The designation of an Urban Deer Unit in no way supersedes existing firearms or archery regulations, or community prohibitions on hunting. It is the responsibility of the hunter to check with local authorities and obey all existing local ordinances and regulations. Hunters must obtain written permission before hunting on private land. Checklist:

  1. Get the landowner’s permission to hunt. See permission form...
  2. Buy your hunting license and deer permit early.
  3. Plug your shotgun.
  4. Make sure you meet hunter orange requirements.
  5. Know how to attach your temporary tag.
  6. No walkie talkies while hunting.
  7. Know your ATV laws.
  8. Know the season dates and bag limits.
  9. Do not litter. Pick up your empty shells.
  10. Follow proper check station procedures.

Hunter Orange

hunter's orange vest Hunting any wild animal (except waterfowl) in the daylight during deer gun season, the statewide primitive deer season, and the special area primitive deer season is unlawful unless the hunter is visibly wearing a vest, coat, jacket, or coveralls that are either solid hunter orange or camouflage hunter orange.


Tree Stands

It is unlawful to construct, place or use a permanent-type tree stand, or to place spikes, nails, wires or other metal objects into a tree to act as steps or to hold a tree stand on public hunting lands. It is also unlawful to do any of these things on private property without first getting the permission of the landowner or the landowner ’s authorized agent.
