In 2008, the 9-acre Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve became the first property owned by the Put-in-Bay Township Park District. The land was purchased with federal Endanged Species Act funding and donations from numerous partners including the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, and many community members including the Scheeff-family for which the park is named.

Beside rows of grapevines, the preserve’s land entrance is at the northeastern tip of South Bass, near the end of State Route 357. The entrance is marked by three boulders and a combination split-rail and chain-link fence that makes the property only accessible to foot-traffic from dawn to dusk.

Foot paths, cut through meadow plants and tall grasses, lead around the perimeter of the peninsula-shaped preserve to the shore. The preserve provides habitat for thousands of migratory birds, numerous species of butterflies and the Lake Erie watersnake.

What appears as a white sand beach is a product of Lake Erie’s waves grinding 20 years of invasive zebra and quagga mussel shells into tiny fragments. Stones of various shapes and sizes are mixed in with the crushed shells and native sand; footwear is recommended. The water level around East Point is extremely shallow, only deep enough for kayakers and canoes to paddle ashore. The preserve offers views of various other islands.
