A brief history:
On August 20, 1794, near the present-day town of Maumee, American forces led by General Anthony Wayne won a decisive victory over combined American Indian forces at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The battle opened the entire Northwest Territory for settlement.
Fearing its absorption into the Michigan territory, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act on June 20, 1835 to create Lucas County. Residents chose the name “Lucas” in honor of Robert Lucas, then governor of Ohio. In this same year, the legislature of the Michigan territory appropriated funds and put out a call for volunteers to prevent the present-day Toledo-area from being seized by Ohio. The “Toledo War,” as this conflict became known, was settled by the U.S. Congress, which designated the disputed 400 square miles of land to Ohio on June 15, 1836. As restitution, Congress gave Michigan, when it became a state, 9,000 square miles of land now known as the Upper Peninsula. The water boundary between the two states continued to be disputed until the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decree on February 22, 1973, fixing the Ohio-Michigan boundary line in Lake Erie where it is today. The boundary divides Turtle Island, which is in Maumee Bay.
During the late nineteenth century, Toledo obtained its nickname "Glass City" for its numerous glass-producing facilities. The city was also the home of the Willys-Overland Company, the largest manufacturer of U.S. military personnel vehicles during World War II. |
